- 1776: Upon landing at Palisades, British troops then begin the assault on Fort Lee during the American Revolutionary War. This forces the retreat of the Continental Army.
- 1789: The first state to ratify the U.S Bill of Rights is New Jersey.
- 1820: Two thousand miles from the western coast of South America, an eighty-ton sperm whale attacks the whaling ship the Essex. This attack would later inspire Herman Melville to write Moby-Dick in 1851.
