America Day in Honduras
America Day is a holiday observed annually in the Republic of Honduras on the 14th day of April. Also known as Pan American Day, this holiday commemorates the creation of the International Union of American Republics in 1890.
This was created at the First International Conference of American States to maintain a level of cooperation between all the member states, including Honduras, Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, and other countries in the Americas.
The International Union of American Republics is now known as the Organization of American States (OAS), and it is the world’s oldest regional organization.
The History of America Day in Honduras
Once nearly all the nations of the Americas had liberated themselves from colonial rule, it became quite obvious that some degree of cooperation between these independent countries must be established. The only question was how much cooperation between countries would be beneficial to all of them.
To solve this problem, the First International Conference of American States was convened at the request of the U.S. in Washington D.C. This conference lasted from October 1889 through April of 1890 and considered a wide range of topics to find the policies that would promote the welfare and prosperity of all member states.
On April 14, 1890, the conference adopted a resolution that formed the International Union of American Republics—an organization that is known as the Organization of American States today. The original member countries of this organization included Argentina, Costa Rica, Cuba, Venezuela, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Colombia, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, and the United States.
Observing America Day in Honduras
Even though the Organization of American States has 35 member nations, only Honduras observes April 14th as a public holiday to mark the events of this day in 1890. On this day, there are special events that commemorate the day and highlight its importance. Since it is a public holiday, people also have the day off to spend with friends and family members.
