Armed Forces’ Day in Sao Tome And Principe
In the island nation of São Tomé and Príncipe, Armed Forces Day is a public holiday observed annually on the 6th of September. This holiday commemorates the country’s military forces, which happen to be one of the smallest militaries in the world. The military of São Tomé and Príncipe has only about 400 active personnel.
The military of this country consists of the Army, National Guard, Presidential Guard, Coast Guard, and Marine Corps. Although it is a public holiday and the general population has the day off, it is a day that is mainly celebrated by the armed forces and not by the general public.
The History of Armed Forces Day in São Tomé and Príncipe
During the late 15th century, Portugal discovered and quickly colonized this island nation, using African slave labor to grow coffee and cocoa during the 19th century. This continued into the 20th century, but independence was finally achieved by the country in 1975.
During the 1980s, democratic reforms were instituted in the country, and in 1991, the country held its first free elections. The military of this country was founded during the 1960s, and their organization has changed very little over the years.
