National Kissing Day is a holiday that’s observed annually on June 22nd. The purpose of this holiday is to celebrate the act of pressing one’s lips against another person’s lips, body part, or even an inanimate object. Although the connotations behind this act may vary from one culture to another, a kiss usually signifies love, passion, sexual attraction, affection, peace, good luck, or respect.
All of these are valid ways that kissing is used around the world. Kissing has been a part of human culture for thousands of years and will probably continue well into the future. That’s why there are now several holidays celebrating this act, including the holiday we’re going to learn about today.
The History of National Kissing Day
Finding a source for the origins of National Kissing Day is difficult. The earliest reference to this holiday that we can find is from 2002, and the reference we found was actually in a British soap opera from June of 2002. These include “The Notebook” (2004), “Titanic” (1997), “Spider-Man” (2002), “Ghost” (1990), and “Gone With the Wind.” Our favorite, though, is probably “The Princess Bride” (1987).
