National Muffin Day

National Muffin Day is a holiday that’s observed annually on the 20th of February and encourages all of us to enjoy some of these individually portioned baked products. Although there is probably a singular ideal muffin that pops into each person’s head when they think of a muffin, the truth of the matter is that there is no one “ideal muffin.”

Muffins come in a variety of different varieties. There are basic chocolate chip and apple-cinnamon muffins, delicious banana muffins, delectable blueberry muffins, savory cornbread muffins, sweet honey muffins, and about a million other types of muffins. That means that anyone wishing to celebrate this day is going to have to decide which muffins they want to enjoy.

The History Of National Muffin Day

Who invented National Muffin Day and why did they invent it? We’re not entirely sure who invented it, but it was probably someone who enjoyed muffins. Since we don’t know the history of this holiday, we decided to go ahead and talk about the history of muffins.

These delicious little cakes are believed to date back to the 10th century, but historians aren’t really sure of that fact. They do know that they got their name from the German word “muffe,” which means “small cakes.”

They also know that the first printed muffin recipe appeared during the 18th century. Of course, these earlier muffins weren’t as sweet as American muffins are nowadays. They were more like baked English bread than modern muffins.

Some Quick Facts About Muffins

Okay, who’s ready for some muffin-related facts to go with their freshly baked muffins? We know we are, so we encourage everyone to grab a muffin, and a glass of milk, and then pull up a chair to enjoy the following facts. We feel that the following facts are just as tasty as the Gooey Butter Cupcakes that we make.

  • English muffins are believed to date back to 10th-century Wales.
  • In 1972, McDonald’s debuted the Egg McMuffin. This is an egg topped with Canadian bacon and American cheese on an English muffin.
  • The state muffin of Washington is Blueberry Muffins.

Observing National Muffin Day

This is a holiday during which people are encouraged to buy muffins from their local supermarket or bakery, or even bake their own. We opt for the latter because making muffins isn’t as hard as many people think it is. As long as there’s a solid recipe, some muffin pans, and a few basic ingredients available, anyone can make muffins successfully.

All a person has to decide is what type of muffins they love and what type they want to share with friends and family members. After making muffins, don’t forget to use the hashtag #NationalMuffinDay to spread the word about this holiday, and hopefully, share a picture of the muffin you baked online.
