Historical Events on March 10
- 1804: After the French flag had been flown the previous evening in St. Louis, Missouri, it was lowered and replaced with the American flag. The day before, the Spanish flag flew. It’s the last part of the “3 Flag Ceremony” that transferred power of the city from Spain to France and eventually to the U.S.
- 1814: At the Battle of Laon in France, Napleon I is defeated.
- 1848: The Mexican American War ends with the ratification of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo by the U.S Senate.
- 1878: Alexander Graham Bell successfully uses a telephone to make a test call.
- 1922: In India, Mahatma Gandhi is arrest and tried for sedition. He would be sentenced to 6-year in prison but would be released after 2-years for an appendicitis operation.
- 1933: Up to 120 people are killed when a 6.4 Mw earthquake hits Long Beach, California. It also caused widespread damage to the Greater L.A. Area and estimated damages were around $40 million dollars.
- 1945: Over 100,000 Japanese civilians are killed when the United States Army Air Force drops fire bombs on the city of Tokyo, Japan.
- 1968: The Battle of Lima Site 85 begins during the Vietnam War. It would end on March 11th.
- 1969: James Earl Ray pleads guilty to assassinating Martin Luther King, Jr. in Memphis, Tennessee.
- 1970: Captain Ernest Medina is charged with My Lai war crimes during the Vietnam War by the United States Military.
