- 1861: The Confederate States of America adopts their Constitution during the American Civil War.
- 1864: Almost 240 people are killed in Sheffield, England during a flood.
- 1888: Commerce is shut down and more than four hundred people are killed when the Great Blizzard of 1888 hits the eastern seaboard of the U.S.
- 1917: Anglo-Indian forces led by General Stanley Maude capture Baghdad during the Mesopotamian Campaign of World War I.
- 1941: The Lend-Lease Act is signed into law by U.S President Franklin D. Roosevelt during World War II. This act allows American manufactured war supplies to be shipped to Allied nations on a loan basis.
- 1945: The United States Pacific Fleet that is anchored at Ulithi Atoll is attacked by the Japanese Navy in a large-scale kamikaze attack.
- 1945: Vietnam is established as a puppet state by the Japanese and Bao Dai is set up as its leader.
- 1946: British forces capture the first commandant of the Auschwitz Concentration Camp – Rudolf Hoss.
- 2006: Michelle Bachelet becomes the 1st female president of Chile.
- 2007: The country of Georgia accuses Russia of attacking the Kodori Valley in Abkhazia with helicopters. Russia will deny the claim.
- 2009: Tighter weapon restrictions are instituted in Germany when 16 people are killed and 11 are injured at the Winnenden School Shooting.
- 2011: A 9.0 magnitude earthquake hits just east of Sendai, Japan. This earthquake not only triggered a tsunami which ended up killing thousands of people, but also set off the 2nd largest nuclear attack in World history.
- 2016: After a heavy rain around the area of Sao Paulo, Brazil, twenty-one people end up being killed by the resulting floods and mudslides.
