- 1775: During the American Revolutionary War, Ethan Allen surrenders to the British after trying to capture Montreal during the Battle of Longue-Pointe.
- 1789: 12 amendments are added to the Constitution by the U.S Congress. These included the Bill of Rights, The Congressional Compensation Amendment and the never ratified Congressional Apportionment Amendment.
- 1846: Zachary Taylor leads United States troops to capture the Mexican city of Monterrey.
- 1890: Sequoia National Park is established by the U.S Congress.
- 1912: Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism is created in New York City.
- 1915: The Second Battle of Champagne starts during WWI.

- 1992: NASA launches the Mars Observer on this day. This $500 million dollar probe is the first United States’ mission to Mars in 17 years. Unfortunately, the probe would fail approximately a year later.
